Several industries use synthetic azo dyes, including food, textile production, printing, and pharmaceuticals. Several synthetic dyes, especially azo dyes, are toxic and harmful to the environment and human health; thereby, their use is strictly controlled by laws and regulations.<br/>This thesis is concerned with the analysis of two synthetic azo dyes, namely sunset yellow (mono azo) and direct red-81 (diazo) dyes.<br/>This thesis also incorporates an analysis of the purity of pharmaceutical compounds, which is a vital aspect of the pharmaceutical industry. Determining drug purity is critical to ensure the drug is free from any starting materials used during its synthesis. Even in small amounts, these starting materials can have a significant impact on the safety and effectiveness of the final drug product. Specific analysis methods are usually required to determine compounds in the presence of related impurities.<br/>In this study, several methods were developed to determine the studied compounds. These methods include spectrophotometric and electrochemical methods of analysis. The potentiometric method was developed to quantitatively determine sunset yellow in complex matrices, including pharmaceutical samples (Rhinotus® syrup) and beverages (Schweppes® tangerine drink); different experimental conditions were studied until reaching the optimum conditions. Another potentiometric method was applied to monitor the biodegradation of direct red 81 by using a dilute mineral salt medium to inoculate microorganisms as a medium for biodegradation. Two chemometric-assisted spectrophotometric methods were adjusted and optimized to analyze hydroxychloroquine in the presence of two process-related impurities in the pure and pharmaceutical dosage forms (Plaquenil® tablet).<br/> |
