Neurotoxicity is one the most common cause of many neurodegenerative diseases. One of the best known neurotoxicants is methylmercury (MeHg), a ubiquitous environmental toxicant that leads to neurological and developmental deficits in animals and humans. Impairment in intracellular calcium homeostasis, alteration of glutamate homeostasis and oxidative stress are considered as important events in MeHg - induced neurotoxicity. Neurotoxicity was induced in rats by oral methylmercuric chloride (MMC) in dose (3 mg / kg, p.o) for fifteen days. Alpha lipoic acid (60 mg / kg p.o) and Ý - glucan (100 and 200 mg / kg, p.o) either alone or in combination were adminstered orally to investigate their therapeutic effects on MMC - induced neurotoxicity. Behavioral changes were evaluated by using activity cage and rotarod methods as well as oxidative stress biochemical parameters for detection of glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were analyzed in brain homogenates. Assessment of brain neurotransmitters (glutamate and GABA) in the cortex and hippocampus of neurotoxic rats
