Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Metallurgical Engineering
Specimens of stainless steel 410S were welded using Electrode E309LT1, preheat at 300{u00B0}C was conducted. Post-weld heat treatment was carried-out at 600{u00B0}C and 700{u00B0}C for one hour. To evaluate the effect of post-weld heat treatment on properties of the welded specimens the microstructure, hardness, impact test and tensile test were carried-out. Also a simulation of HAZ properties was done by heating specimens of the base metal at different temperatures in the range from [750{u00B0}C to 1300{u00B0}C]. Post-weld heat treatment increased the impact toughness from 50J to 124J after tempering at 600{u00B0}C and to 180J after tempering at 700{u00B0}C. Other properties were not significantly affected. Simulation of HAZ by heating specimens of 410S at different temperatures from 750{u00B0}C to 1300{u00B0}C for 30 minutes showed good correlation with hardness distribution in HAZ and base metal and with the microstructure distribution of actual as-welded HAZ. However marked grain growth occurred especially in specimens heated to 1200 and 1300{u00B0}C indicating that the time of heating should be as low as possible (about 10 to 15 min.) maximum
