Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Institute of Educational Studies - Department of Curriculum and Methods of Teaching Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of teaching collocations in developing English active vocabulary of the first secondary stage students. A pre-test has been administered to examine students' knowledge and use of vocabulary in writing and speaking. Data driven from the pre- test have confirmed students{u2019} weakness using vocabulary and limited knowledge of collocation. Thus the researcher made a checklist of vocabulary and types of collocation that are adequate to the first year of the secondary stage to be taught. A quasi experimental study has been conducted including two groups: an experimental group and a control one. The results of the post-test have confirmed the hypotheses that a strong linear correlation exists between vocabulary knowledge and use in writing and speaking and using collocation, Students have used vocabulary in writing better than speaking because it is easier
