Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anatomy Summary: Rifampicin is one of the main drugs used for treatment of tuberculosis. However Rifampicin was proved to have adverse side effects such as hepatotoxicity. The present study was carried out to detect the histopathological effects of RMP on the liver of adult albino rats and to study the possible protective role of vitamin "E" in prevention of RMP-induced hepatotoxicity. Rifampicin (RMP) treated group showed various degrees of histopathological changes in the form of dilatation and congestion of the hepatic sinusoids, numerous Von Kupffer cells and inflammatory cellular infiltration. The hepatocytes showed intracytoplasmic vacuolations, nuclear pyknosis, necrosis and apoptosis. The liver showed obvious increase in fibrous tissue amount. Glycogen depletion and marked increase in acid phosphatase enzyme activity were noticed in the liver cells. The hepatotoxicity of Rifampicin increased by prolongation of its administration. With the use of vitamin E in conjunction with RMP the liver of the rats of group IV showed remarkable improvement of the histological and histochemical pattern.
