Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anesthesia Summary: The reduction of acutely raised intraocular pressure prior to surgery is often essential. Mannitol has been the primary hyperosmolar agent for nearly a century and remains the gold standard for medical management of intracranial hypertension. anaesthesiologists use intravenous hypertonic saline for lowering intracranial pressure and over the last 25 years, HTS has become a progressively more common alternative to mannitol.Well established systemic medications to reduce IOP rapidly include acetazolamide either oral or intravenous, oral glycerol and intravenous mannitol. Because of their contraindication profiles and dangerous side effects, they are not always applicable to all patients
