Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Summary: Objective: The aim of this study is to assess beta two microglobulin (Ý2MG) level in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and to correlate Ý2MG level with disease activity of SLE. Methods: Serum Ý2MG, assessed by enzyme linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA), was evaluated in 40 SLE patients (their mean age of 28.5±7.9 years), and in 40 age and sex matched healthy controls. Results: Serum Ý2MG levels were found to be significantly higher in SLE patients when compared to healthy controls (<0.001). Correlation between Ý2MG with disease activity as measured by SLEDAI showed a statistically significant difference with p-value (<0.001). In the current study we found Statistical significant correlation between Ý2MG and proteinuria with p value < 0.001.We detected positive significant correlation between Ý2MG [hematuria (p<0.005), pyuria (p <0.01) and creatinine (p=0.001)]. No significant correlation between Ý2MG and arthritis (p=0.77). Ý2MG was positively correlated with ESR with p value<0.05. No significant correlation was found between Ý2MG and C3, and also between Ý2MG and CRP. Our results showed negative correlation between Ý2MG and Hb with p value <0.05. No significance between Ý2MG and disease severity measured by SLE International collaborating clinics/American college of rheumatology damage Index (SLICC/ACR). Conclusion: Serum Ý2MG is elevated in SLE especially in lupus nephritis patients. It positively correlated with disease activity index SLEDAI and with nephritis. These data suggest that the measurement of serum Ý2MG seem to be useful to assess the disease activity especially in lupus nephritis
