Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Summary: The present work was constructed to study the potential therapeutic effect of low dose gamma irradiation alone or combined with valproic acid or topiramate as antiepileptic drugs on an experimental model of acute convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazole in rats. Rats were classified into two sets each one consists of 5 groups. Set I includes groups related to valproic acid alone or combined with low dose whole body gamma irradiation. Set II includes groups related to topiramate alone or combined with low dose whole body gamma irradiation. After pentylenetetrazole injection, Racine{u2019} score, latency and duration of convulsions were observed for 30 min. Moreover, the brain hippocampi contents of biogenic amines (glutamate and GABA) as well as AKT/m-TOR signalling pathway assessment [protein kinase B (AKT), mammalian target of rapamycin (m-TOR), protein S6], caspase 3 relative gene expression was assessed, oxidative stress biomarkers ( MDA, GSH and NO) were examined. Brain hippocampi were also used for histopathological examination
