Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Operative Dentistry Summary: This study aims to determine the effect of different glass ionomer in the healing of deep carious lesion after partial caries removal. A total of 50 teeth of patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected to participate in the study. Then they were divided into two main groups: control group and intervention group. Teeth with deep caries undergone caries removal with hand or rotary instrument after rubber dame isolation, the caries was removed selectively to firm dentin using the partial caries removal technique and the tested materials were placed in the final restoration. The control group receive a high viscosity glass ionomer(Equia fill) and intervention group receive a zinc modified glass ionomer(Chemfill rock). Postoperative hypersensitivity (using thermal test and percussion test) and periapical lesions (using digital periapical radiograph) were tested in this period at the baseline (T0), after three months (T3) and after six months (T6). After following up period only 48 teeth were statistically analyzed Results showed that both materials have the same effect postoperatively on the pulpal tissues confirmed with thermal, percussion tests and with digital radiograph. We concluded that under the limitation of this study: 1.Glass ionomer either conventional or zinc modified could be successfully used as restoration with partial caries removal technique. 2.zinc modified glass ionomer lessen the postoperative hypersensitivity associated with partial caries removal. 3.Partial caries removal technique could preserve pulp vitality.Clinical recommendation: Further studies to assess the clinical behavior of material is needed for more long time of assessment
