Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences (NILES) - Department of Laser Applications in Medical Biological Summary: Objectives: Photodynamic therapy is an alternative therapeutic approach for eradicating pathogenic bacteria in periodontal diseases. As the conventional treatment doesn{u2019}t completely eliminate periodontal pathogens. For this purpose, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of erythrosine photosensitizer with light emitting diode LED {u2013} or diode laser on Fusobacterium nucleatum as periodontal pathogens. Material and methods: Standard suspension of F. nucleatum were exposed to Light Emitting Diode (440-480 nm) or green laser (532 nm) in combination with erythrosine (22 om) for 2, 3 and 5 min irradiation time. using identical irradiation parameters for comparison between treatment groups ( control untreated {u2013} photosensitizer only {u2013} blue light only {u2013} green laser only {u2013} blue light with erythrosine {u2013} green laser with erythrosine ). Survival of bacteria was determined by counting the number of colony forming units (CFU) after incubation. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: Erythrosine in combination with (blue LED or green laser) at exposure time 5 min showed the highest bacterial reduction (98 %) with a significant difference than erythrosine alone or light / laser alone (p = 000.1)
