Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Prosthodontics Summary: The present study was carried out on 26 completely edentulous patients. An informed consent was obtained from each patient. Patients received either screw-retained restorations or telescopic overdentures which were supported on four maxillary and four mandibular implants. The patients were imaged using CBCT and the DICOM data were imported to computer software for virtual implant planning. The virtual surgical guide was sent for prototyping to construct a computer-guided stent and implants were installed with a flapless technique. A follow up protocol at the day of loading, 6 months, 12 months and 18 months was scheduled to assess maintenance requirements. During the 18 months follow-up period, prosthodontic complications for the telescopic overdentures and the screw-retained restorations were registered and calculated. Regarding the removable group the most common complications were screw loosening of the abutment and prosthetic teeth fracture. While screw loosening of the abutments and prosthesis, fractured acrylic resin, fracture of teeth and remake of the prosthesis occurred in the fixed group. The results of the study revealed that there was no significant difference between the fixed and the removable group. The total incidence of prosthetic complications recorded was 10 times in the removable group and 14 times in the fixed group with no significant difference between both groups
