Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department Of Periodontology
All components of ECM are degraded by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) , a family of zinc - dependent neutral endopeptidases (Birkedal - Hansen et al , 1993) Two types of MMPs are required for dissolution of interstitial collagen : collagenases and gelatinases (Mao D et al , 1999) Collagenase - 1 (MMP - 1) , collagenase - 2 (MMP - 8) and collagenase - 3 (MMP - 13) are the principal secreted neutral proteinases that initiate degradation of native fibrillar collagens of type I , II , III and VThey all cleave fibrillar collagens , which are further degraded by gelatinases (Kahari and Saarialho - Kere , 1999)
