Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of platelet-rich fibrin combined biphasic calcium phosphate usage in repairing of alveolar cleft defect and compare its efficacy with that of autogenous bone by means of volumetric analysis.
Patients and methods: controlled clinical trial including 18 patients with alveolar cleft defect. a control group grafted with corticocancellous bone graft harvested from the anterior iliac crest and study group grafted with platelet-rich fibrin combined biphasic calcium phosphate. Cone beam computed tomography were obtained 1 week preoperatively,2 weeks and 6 months postoperatively to assess the Preoperative volume of alveolar cleft defect, volume of packed graft material, the volume of newly formed bone and the height of bone bridge 6 months postoperatively.
Results: The control group had significant larger volume of bone bridging compared with the study group.
Conclusion: Autogenous bone still the first choice for alveolar cleft grafting
