This study explored the socio-cognitive construction of gender as a social identity within humorous Facebook memes, focusing on their role in reinforcing or challenging the hierarchical gender order within Egyptian society. It examined the responses the memes provoke, ranging from tolerance to intolerance of prejudice. The study integrated gender and power theory with social identity theory to provide a multilayered analysis at individual, interactional, and institutional levels. Thematic analysis identified ten predominant themes that revealed a widespread negative depiction of both men and women. Multimodal critical discourse analysis further highlighted the complex dynamics of gender stereotyping and othering. This phenomenon can be partially explained by in-group favouritism dynamics. Interestingly, the negative portrayals often emerged from creators of both gender groups, suggesting a deeper underlying social mechanism at play. A significant aspect of the study is the exploration of how memes reflect and construct different masculinities and femininities which are hierarchized according to varying degrees of power. The study identified how memes can reinforce dominant masculinities and femininities while also offering a platform for oppositional identities that question the established hierarchal gender order. The predominance of "haha" reactions on the memes indicated that humour plays a significant role in how gendered content is interpreted. The enjoyment of memes that derogate the out-group and, paradoxically, even the in-group, aligns with in-group favouritism when understood within the context of idealized gender norms and the differing perceptions of these norms among users. Overall, the analysis underscored the role of memes as a significant arena for the construction and negotiation of gender identities within the symbolic domain. These identities were shaped by both the media and the active agency of meme creators, who can either challenge or perpetuate the hierarchical gender order.
