Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmaceutics Summary: This study aimed to mask the bitter taste of Mebeverine HCl by using different methods including; ion exchange resin complexation technique and formation of solid dispersion. Evaluation studies were followed the formulation to evaluate the ability of formulae in masking the bitter taste of the drug. Hence, the work in this thesis was divided into two chapters. First one is formulation of Mebeverine HCl resinates using Tulsion 660 which is a cation exchange resin and then formulation of Mebeverine HCl solid dispersions using four different carriers in the second chapter. Drug resinate was evaluated for taste masking by using panel and UV methods, equilibrium time, drug loading and in-vitro drug release. Study of drug release from its resinates was obtained at salivary pH (phosphate buffer of pH 6.8) and gastric pH (0.1 N HCl of pH 1.2) for 2 hours. The formula DR18 which contained drug: resin ratio of 1:4, drug amount of 1% and formulated by double loading technique was selected as the formula of choice in case of ion exchange resin Complexation concerning the last mentioned evaluation tests in masking drug bitter taste. The selected solid dispersion formula (SD7) which contained drug: Eudragit E100 ratio of 1:5 and prepared by using rotovap solvent evaporation technique had no bitter taste showing high score concerning panel test
