Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
The sample was divided randomly into 2 equal groups; the first group consisted of 33 teeth representing a control group without RFs and the second group contained 33 teeth that were subjected to RFs created by mechanical force, the fractured teeth were 11 VRFs, 11 HRFs and 11 oblique RFs. All teeth were mounted on dry human mandibles. All the samples were radiographed with two different imaging modalities (CBCT and PSP). The data was analyzed by three observers (Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University, Lecturer of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University and the third one is a master candidate of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University). The observers evaluated the presence and the direction of RFs using five points score; (1) definitely absent, (2) probably absent, (3) unsure, (4) probably present and (5) definitely present. For the diagnostic accuracy of the two modalities used in this study, the statistical analysis was performed using Kappa test, sensitivity, specificity and likelihood ratio.Comparing the two groups throughout the whole study, the sensitivity and specificity of the CBCT (75.27% and 91.39% respectively) were higher than PSP plate (68.81% and 73.11% respectively) regarding the presence and absence of RF.The sensitivity of CBCT in detection of vertical, horizontal and oblique RFs (66.67%, 68.62% and 62.32% respectively) was greater than PSP plate (51.84%, 64.77% and 52.37% respectively). The specificity of CBCT in detection of vertical, horizontal and oblique RFs (96.78%, 93.54% and 90.34% respectively) was greater than PSP plate (94.85%, 86.01% and 81.54% respectively). The positive and negative likelihood ratio was better for CBCT when compared to PSP plate which indicated that the CBCT was more accurate than PSP plate regarding the presence and types of root fracture
