Summary, etc.	Aim: The study evaluates the effects of palatal crib versus bonded spurs in the early <br/>treatment of anterior open bite caused by non-nutritive sucking habits. <br/>Methodology: This randomised clinical trial was conducted at the Outpatient <br/>Diagnostic Clinic, Pediatric Dentistry, Cairo University. Participants were recruited <br/>from September 2022 to May 2023. Thirty children aged 6-11 years with anterior open <br/>bite ≥ 1 mm and Angle Class I malocclusions were randomly assigned to two groups. <br/>Group FPC (15 children) received a fixed palatal crib (mean age 8.60 ± 1.55 years), <br/>and Group BS (15 children) received bonded spurs (mean age 8.33 ± 0.98 years). <br/>Digital dental models and lateral cephalograms were obtained pre-treatment and after <br/>12 months. Patient acceptance was assessed through a questionnaire. Randomisation <br/>was done using computer-generated sequences with an allocation ratio of 1:1. <br/>Results: There was a significantly greater extent of overbite increase in the FPC group <br/>compared to the BS group, with a mean difference of 1.22 mm (95% CI: 0.44 to 2.00 <br/>mm; p < 0.01) Additionally, the FPC group exhibited a more pronounced mesial <br/>movement of the upper molars, with a reduction in the upper first molar to rugae <br/>distance by 1.02 mm compared to the BS group. The FPC group exhibited significant <br/>dentoalveolar changes, including reductions in mandibular arch perimeter by 2.57 mm <br/>(95% CI: -4.19 to -0.94, p < 0.01), maxillary arch length by 1.56 mm (95% CI: -2.27 to <br/>-0.84, p < 0.001), mandibular arch length by 1.62 mm (95% CI: -2.24 to -1.00, p < <br/>0.001), and maxillary intermolar distance by 0.71 mm (95% CI: -1.21 to -0.22). <br/><br/><br/> vii <br/><br/>The FPC group also showed a significant decrease in incisor mandibular plane angle <br/>by 6.75° (95% CI: -10.13 to -3.38, p < 0.001), contributing to a higher increase in the <br/>interincisal angle by 6.12° (95% CI: 0.77 to 11.47, p < 0.05). No significant changes <br/>were observed in the maxillary-mandibular plane angle or other skeletal measurements <br/>in either group, with a mean difference for the maxillary-mandibular plane angle of <br/>1.56° (95% CI: -0.94 to 4.06, p > 0.05). <br/><br/> <br/><br/>Conclusion: The FPC appliance demonstrated greater effectiveness than the BS <br/>appliance in achieving overbite correction and inducing significant dentoalveolar <br/>changes. Despite these significant dentoalveolar changes, neither appliance resulted in <br/>meaningful alterations in skeletal measurements, indicating a limited skeletal impact <br/>from both treatments. Patient acceptance was higher for bonded spurs, particularly in <br/>terms of speaking adjustment and quicker adaptation. Further research with larger <br/>sample sizes and longer follow-ups is needed to confirm these findings and to explore <br/>other potential skeletal and dentoalveolar effects.
