| Summary, etc. | All humans on the planet were affected with the declaration <br/>of the COVID-19 pandemic by the WHO on March 11th 2020. <br/>The rising numbers of the newly infected coupled with the <br/>daily fatality count were followed closely by millions (Abd et <br/>al., 2022). <br/>In an effort to cope with the situation worldwide, vaccines <br/>were being developed. The testing stage for assuring efficacy <br/>and safety of the developing vaccines were conducted in three <br/>phases (Polack et al., 2020).Unfortunately the sudden acute <br/>state of the events didn’t allow for a study of the delayed <br/>effects of the vaccines being developed (Li et al., 2020). <br/>A raising concern about the effect of Corona virus infection <br/>on male fertility was brought upon by the discovery of <br/>impaired spermatogenesis in some of COVID- 19 patients. <br/>This observation was explained in two ways: <br/>- Elevation of the immune response and cytokine storm in the testis or <br/>-Autoimmune orchitis observed in pathology specimens of <br/>deceased patients of COVID -19 (Li et al., 2020). <br/>Both trans-membrane serine protease 2 and angiotensin <br/>converting enzyme 2 are targets of the virus. Unfortunately <br/>both are expressed in spermatogonia of the testis and <br/>spermatogonial stem cells, making them one of the targets of <br/>the virus. Theoretically it is possible that a resembling effect <br/>can occur in those acquiring the vaccine for it may illicit a <br/>similar immune response (Corona et al., 2022). <br/><br/><br/> <br/><br/>Infertility is an important issue. It creates an <br/>array of different problems and burdens on the <br/>individual and the governments. The most <br/>pronounced of these problems are economical, <br/>social, and psychological distress to the infertile <br/>couple. Additionally there is an economical <br/>burden on the health care system (Pourmasumi <br/>et al., 2019). <br/>The concerns regarding the vaccine’s <br/>effect on male fertility is an imperative one <br/>due to: <br/> The importance of fertility<br/> The real possibility of testicular <br/>damage and by extension the <br/>possibility of infertility later on <br/>following COVID-19 infection<br/> The immunological aspect of the <br/>testicular injury (Kristian et al., <br/>2023). |
