Summary, etc. Background:Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a common and challenging condition in immobilized patients, significantly impacting their quality of life and increasing healthcare burdens. Traditional wound care strategies often yield slow results, prompting the exploration of electrotherapeutic modalities. Microcurrent therapy (MCT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) had emerged as promising adjuncts due to their roles in enhancing tissue repair and promoting circulation.Purpose: This randomized controlled trial intended to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of MCT compared to TENS in the treatment of sacral pressure ulcers. Subjects and methods: Forty-four patients with sacral pressure ulcers in stages II and III were recruited from Belbeis Central Hospital and were randomly assigned into two equal groups. Their ages ranged from 40 to 60 years. Group A received MCT with a current intensity in the microampere range, applied three times per week for six weeks. Group B received TENS with low-frequency electrical stimulation for the same duration. Both groups also received standard wound care. The primary outcomes were assessed using Duplex Ultrasound and the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) to evaluate changes in tissue perfusion and wound size. Results:Results revealed that both groups experienced significant improvement in local blood flow parameters as measured by duplex ultrasound and in wound healing as assessed by the PUSH scale. Although Group A (MCT) showed a greater mean reduction in wound area and a higher vascular response, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05).Conclusion: These findings suggested that microcurrent therapy was more effective than TENS in accelerating the healing of sacral pressure ulcers.
520 #3 - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
