This study concerned itself with linguistic devices, particularly metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche, employed to demonstrate racial discrimination in Maya Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings(1969). The study aimed to detect the linguistic devices that manifest discrimination against the African Americans. It is significant insofar as it attempts to fill a gap in the linguistic domain of the analysis of Maya Angelou’s autobiographies through an eclectic approach that combines Jones (2000) theoretical framework of analysing racism with a critical discourse historical model proposed by Martin Reisigl and Ruth Wodak (2001). The linguistic analysis employed the referential strategies by which social actors are constructed to investigate the linguistic realization of discrimination.Through a mixed method approach, the study analysed the text to identify instances of institutionalised, personally mediated, and internalised racism.The procedures included reading the whole text of the autobiography for detecting and categorizing linguistic realisations of discrimination. In addition, computer software program Adobe Acrobat Reader has been employed to extract numerical data of the occurrence of racist words in the text, which signifies intensity of racist discourse. The results detected racist discourse practiced by the Whites against African Americans on two levels; institutionalised racism and personally mediated racism.It also traced internalised racism represented in the negative self-image of the main persona as an African American individual.

ترجع أهمية الأدب الإفريقي الأمريكي إلى الخلفية المجتمعية والنفسية للمجتمع الأمريكي التي إنعكست على هذا الأدب، حيث تمحورت الغايات الأدبية للأعمال حول التعبير عن التمييز العنصري والمعاناة التي تكبدها الأفارقة ذوو البشرة السمراء في المجتمع الأمريكي منذ استدراجهم أو إختطافهم من وطنهم في إفريقيا والمجيء بهم للعمل بالإكراه وإستعبادهم في أمريكا، كانوا يكتبون ليوثقوا تلك التجارب. تعتبر الأديبة الأمريكية من أصول إفريقية مايا أنجلو (1928-2014) من الكتاب الذين أسهموا بكتابة سيرتهم الذاتية ليوثقوا معاناة ذوي البشرة السمراء. لذا فإن هذه الورقة البحثية تبنت تناول إحدى كتب السيرة الذاتية لأنجلو تحت عنوان "أعلم لما يغني العصفور السجين" الذي تم نشره عام 1969. تناولت الورقة البحثية عمل الكاتبة من منظور التحليل النقدي للخطاب. إعتمدت هذه الدراسة منهج إنتقائي يجمع بين نموذج التحليل اللغوي للكاتبين مارتن رايزيل وروث ووداك (2001) بالإضافة إلى نموذج جونز (2000) . تبنت الدراسة البحث في الآليات اللغوية وتحديداً أساليب الإحالة والتسمية للتعبير عن التمييز العرقي بالإضافة إلى تصنيف العنصرية وفقاً لنموذج جونز إلىالعنصرية المؤسسية والتمييز العنصري الفردي والعنصرية الذاتية من خلال تناول نوعي وكمي للدراسة اللغوية محل البحث حيث تم تحليل النص بواسطة نموذج التحليل المذكور- لكن بتبني جزئي للنموذج - للوقوف على أساليب الإحالة والكناية والمجاز والإستعارة الدالة على التمييز العنصري. تكمن أهمية الدراسة إلى الحاجة إلى ملء ثغرة أكاديمية في مجال البحث اللغوي فيما يخص كِتاب السيرة الذاتية محل البحث.
