Literature can be an effective tool for investigating the importance of the dissemination of
children’s rights. This role will be examined in this study through comparing three different
works of art, namely Sad Faced Boy (1937) by the African American writer Arna Bontemps
(1902-1973), “On Children’s Rights” (2000) by the Egyptian writer Abdel Tawab Youssef
(1928-2015), Shadow (2010) by the British novelist Michael Morpurgo (1943). The research
aims to explore how children’s rights are being dealt with in children’s literature in different
cultures and societies and how the context of each work of fiction plays a serious role in
covering a broad spectrum of the rights of children to create awareness that children’s rights
should be respected in different culture and on the global level. The writers of the selected works
shed light on how works of fiction can empower the child reader and make the child aware that
his/her rights should be acquired and respected regardless of race, color, gender, religion and
culture. This research will reveal the social, political and cultural contexts that influenced each
writer and his writing. Using the documents and conventions of The United Nations, this thesis
will examine how several articles in these documents are tackled in the selected literary works to
introduce children’s rights to children and young adults. Because the characters’ journey to
acquire their rights lead eventually to self-realization, Carl Jung’s psychoanalytical approach in
making use of the archetype of the self which symbolizes the wholeness of the individual’s
personality to analyze the characters of the selected works will also be relevant.

يمكن للأدب أن يكون أداة لبحث أهمية التوعية بنشر حقوق الطفل؛ لذلك سوف تلقي هذه الدراسة الضوء على دور الأدب في اكتشاف أهمية حقوق الطفل؛ من خلال المقارنة بين ثلاثة نصوص أدبية مختلفة: Sad-Faced Boy الولد ذو الوجه العابس (1937) للكاتب الأمريكي صاحب الأصول الأفريقية أرنا بونتمبس (1902-1973)، وكتاب "حول حقوق الطفل" (2000) للكاتب المصري عبد التواب يوسف (1928-2015)، وأخيرًا رواية Shadowالظل (2010) للكاتب البريطاني مايكل مورپورجو (1943). تسعى الدراسة إلى اكتشاف كيف يتم التعامل مع حقوق الطفل في الأعمال الأدبية التي تنتمي لثقافات ومجتمعات مختلفة، وكيف يمكن للسياق المحيط بالعمل الأدبي أن يعكس محاور عديدة مختصة بحقوق الطفل؛ لنشر التوعية بأن حقوق الطفل لا بد أن تُحترم في مختلف الثقافات وعلى المستوى العالمي. يقوم كتاب الأعمال الأدبية المختارة في هذه الدراسة بإلقاء الضوء على دور الأدب في تعزيز قدرة الأطفال على إدراك حقوقهم؛ إيمانًا بأن للأطفال حقوقًا يجب الحصول عليها واحترامها؛ بغض النظر عن العرق، واللون، والديانة، والثقافة. كما يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة السياقات الاجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية، التي بدورها أثَّرت على كل كاتب وكتاباته؛ وذلك باستخدام المعاهدات والوثائق التابعة للأمم المتحدة المَعنية بحقوق الطفل. تفحص هذه الرسالة كيف تم تناول العديد من المواد المتعلقة باتفاقيات حقوق الطفل في النصوص الأدبية المختارة؛ بهدف تقديم الحقوق لكل من الأطفال والشباب. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل الشخصيات في الأعمال الأدبية المختارة، من خلال تطبيق منهج التحليل النفسي للعالم السويسري كارل يونج؛ وذلك باستخدام النموذج الأوَّلي للنفس، الذي يرمز إلى الكمال والتفرد في الشخصية.
