Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electrical Power and Machines Summary: Accurate fault location on transmission lines is an important subject for researchers and network users to be assuring of continuity of supplying electric power, reducing outage time and reducing customer complaints. There are some factors affecting the process of fault location which are neglecting impact of fault resistance, supposing the parameters of the transmission line are fixed, false detecting and classifying of faults and neglecting the synchronization angle between both ends. For improving these negative effects, this thesis introduces a scheme for calculating transmission line parameters and extended to detect and classify both low and high impedance faults. This scheme also calculates low impedance fault location using unsynchronized measurements for voltage and current from both ends and also measures the accuracy of calculating low impedance fault location when the communication link between both ends fails by using the measurements of voltage and current at single end. This scheme is extended to calculate high impedance fault location using the measurements of voltage and current from both ends
