Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.)-Cairo University, 2024. Summary: There is growing evidence that disturbed eating behaviors as well as obesity co-occurs with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. In addition there is increasing concerns regarding the anxiety as a mediator for the correlation between disturbed eating behaviors and obesity. Objective: This study aimed to assess eating behaviors in children with ADHD and their association with their ADHD profile and to compare disturbed eating behavior in ADHD children with healthy matched control. It also aimed to assess the relation between ADHD profile and BMI in children and to examine association between anxiety traits and eating behavior in children with ADHD. Method: The study was a case control study and conducted among 90 participants divided into two groups matched for age, gender and years of education, 45 participants in each. ADHD children group and was recruited from child psychiatric clinic located at the Center of Social and Preventive Medicine and from child psychiatric outpatient clinic located at Kasr Al Ainy Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital, Cairo University hospitals. Healthy control group and was recruited from children of workers and employees at Kasr Al Ainy Hospital, Cairo University hospitals after excluding psychiatric disorders clinically by DSM IV. It was a convenient sample after fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were evaluated according to DSM- IV, Conner’s Parent Rating Scale- Revised Long version (CPRS-R-L), Emotional Eating scale adapted for children (ESS-C), Children’s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and Spence Children Anxiety Scale (SCAS). Body mass index is also evaluated (BMI). Results: Disturbed eating behavior in ADHD children is not higher than healthy matched control. There is positive association between emotional overeating, satiety responsiveness and slowness of eating and ADHD profile subscales in ADHD children. There is no relation between ADHD profile and BMI. There is positive association between obsessive compulsive symptoms and fussy eating in children with ADHD. Conclusion: Some eating behaviors are associated with ADHD profile symptoms in children with ADHD; however, BMI is not affected. Obsessive compulsive traits are associated with some eating behaviors in children with ADHD.
