This study examines social media addiction and its relationship with anxiety levels among youth within the Context of the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) concept. The study is based on the theoretical foundations of the Compensatory Internet Use Theory and the Social Comparison Theory, and it employs a moderated mediation model to examine the interplay between these variables. This descriptive study employs a field survey method, combining both descriptive and inferential approaches, by surveying a sample of (488) Egyptian youth aged 18 to 35 years who are active social media users.
The findings indicate that the majority of participants exhibit moderate levels of social media addiction, highlighting the widespread nature of this behavior and its association with addictive tendencies. Additionally, a segment of the sample falls into the high addiction category, the study also reveals elevated anxiety levels among the participants, with a significant proportion classified within the high anxiety category. Moreover, the results confirm a positive and statistically significant correlation between social media addiction and anxiety levels, with FOMO playing a mediating role in this relationship.
