Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc)-Cairo University, 2024. Summary: Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common and painful dental issue characterized by brief, sharp pain when exposed dentin reacts to various stimuli. Bioactive glass and different types of lasers have been tested in treating DH. Yet, none have incorporated them together in occluding exposed dentinal tubules. Aim of the study: The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser (λ = 2780 nm) and bioactive glass nanoparticles (NanoBG) paste either alone or in combination with different sequences on dentinal tubules closure. Materials and methods: Forty extracted human sound premolars teeth were used for this study. They were distributed equally into 5 groups (n=10). Control group: received no treatment. NanoBG Group: treated with nanoBG paste only; Er,Cr:YSGG laser Group: treated with laser irradiation alone, Er,Cr:YSGG laser + NanoBG group: treated with nanoBG paste after laser irradiation. NanoBG+ Er,Cr:YSGG laser group: treated with nanoBG paste before laser irradiation. Dentin specimens were assessed morphologically by scanning electron microscope (SEM), with subsequent analysis of the mean diameter of dentinal tubules, and calcium and phosphorous analysis by Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. Results: NanoBG+ Er,Cr:YSGG laser group showed significantly improved dentinal tubules closure compared to the other groups through SEM imaging. The results were confirmed by the EDX analysis which revealed the highest calcium and phosphorus weight %, in addition to recording the lowest mean diameter of dentinal tubules with statistically significant difference between groups (p<0.05). v Conclusion: The application of nanoBG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and the combination of both provided satisfactory occlusion of the dentinal tubules. Yet, the combination of nano-BG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser was found more efficient with superior results, rather than using each modality alone.

Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common and painful dental issue
characterized by brief, sharp pain when exposed dentin reacts to various stimuli.
Bioactive glass and different types of lasers have been tested in treating DH. Yet, none
have incorporated them together in occluding exposed dentinal tubules.
Aim of the study: The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of erbium,
chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser (λ = 2780 nm) and
bioactive glass nanoparticles (NanoBG) paste either alone or in combination with
different sequences on dentinal tubules closure.
Materials and methods: Forty extracted human sound premolars teeth were used for
this study. They were distributed equally into 5 groups (n=10). Control group:
received no treatment. NanoBG Group: treated with nanoBG paste only;
Er,Cr:YSGG laser Group: treated with laser irradiation alone, Er,Cr:YSGG laser +
NanoBG group: treated with nanoBG paste after laser irradiation. NanoBG+
Er,Cr:YSGG laser group: treated with nanoBG paste before laser irradiation. Dentin
specimens were assessed morphologically by scanning electron microscope (SEM),
with subsequent analysis of the mean diameter of dentinal tubules, and calcium and
phosphorous analysis by Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis.
Results: NanoBG+ Er,Cr:YSGG laser group showed significantly improved dentinal

Conclusion: The application of nanoBG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser, and the combination
of both provided satisfactory occlusion of the dentinal tubules. Yet, the combination of
nano-BG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser was found more efficient with superior results, rather
than using each modality alone.
